Friday ARTS DAY
Friday is the day that we meet the artist and talk about creativity, music, books, blogs, film, productions, songs, art, dance, and meet the people behind the work. Clap Clap Clap…
What are they doing? What are they passionate about? How do they see their art? What is God saying to them and through their art? These are the people like me Hooray, who walk to the beat of the other drum in the other universe.
- Art should be disturbing, it should be prophetic. If it is not pushing boundaries or buttons it’s not hitting the mark.
- Art is also a comfort, it soothes, it stimulates and it is a vehicle of peace.
I love this quote:
“Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable”. Banksy
When I think of the power of music I am reminded of King David. His music had the power to dismiss demons. The Bible tells us that Saul came to love David because “it came about whenever the evil spirit from God came to Saul, David would take the harp and play it with his hands; and Saul would be refreshed and be well, and the evil spirit would depart from him (1 Samuel 16:23)”. I wonder how often we think of that in our worship services?
Artists like windows exist to show us the world.
They are the ones who navigate complex issues and help us see them as beautiful. They give us language for our pain and vision in our darkness.
The poets, the deep souls, the sanguine energetic exotics and the reclusive philosophers. Often these muses and troubadours are captivated by reflection, contemplation, worship and the Psalms and so I will often be inviting them to share a devotion on the following Monday.
“Blessed are the weird people; posts, misfits, writers, mystics, painters, troubadours: For they teach us to see the world through different eyes”. Jacob Nordby.

I have also walked through darkness, my heart reaches out to you during yours. God will make a way.

The desire to communicate and create through music and art is an echo of the Creator. It is an integrable part of the imago dei, being created in the image of God. David was the first music therapist recorded in history. One of the best books that I have read on this subject is ‘Resonant Witness’ by Begbie and Guthrie (Editors).
